Ella Loftsgard

Born In: Canada

Passed in: Canada

LOFTSGARD - Ella Ruth was born on September 10, 1914 at the family farm to Florence and Percy Hadwen. She attended Horse Butte School for all of her formal education. She, her brother Harold and sister Jean would either walk or ride horseback to school which was a mile from their home. At the age of 22 she married Karl Loftsgard who had also attended Horse Butte School and whose parents homesteaded just over the butte from the Hadwens. With things being as tough as they were in the "dirty thirties" Karl and Ella moved to Port Melon, British Columbia to work at a pulp mill. They had many experiences living on the coast that "prairie dogs" wouldn't normally experience such as the Captain of their small ferry boat getting drunk and singing "Peggy O'Neil" as they sailed up the coastline. After the pulp mill shut down they returned to Saskatchewan to open an Electric Shop in Kyle (1945). Ella would look after the front of the store while Karl and his employees would do the actual wiring. Is is during this time that Karl and Ella raised their three children: Vivien, Carol and Armin. In the Spring of 1955 they also took over the family farm. Before they were busy...now they were really busy with the electric business and the farm. Around about 1964, they sold the electric shop to the McMillan boys and semi-retired to just farm. Karl died in 1992 and Ella kept an interest in the farm along with her son Armin up until a few years before she passed away. She left us on the 20th of July, 2010. Ella was a quiet person that kept pretty much to herself. Her family was important to her and she had expectations of them to help out and do their best at whatever they chose to do. Gardening was always an enjoyable hobby for her and she absolutely loved their semi-retirement on the farm. She will be sadly missed by her three children, eight grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren. A graveside service was held at the Horse Butte Cemetery on Saturday, July 23rd, 2010 at 2:00 PM with Pastor Linda Hall officiating. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
