Wilson A. Smith age 92, of Amherst, N.S. passed away peacefully in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on May 23, 2009 with family at his side. Born on October 12, 1916 in Amherst, N.S., he was the son of the late Elmer E. an d Clara (Newcombe) Smith. Wilson was a highly-decorated veteran of the Second World War, having served as part of the West Nova Scotia Regiment in Belgium, England, France, Germany, and Holland. After returning from the war he was employed with Corrections CAnada in Dorchester and later in the Springhill penitentiaries as Chief Steward. Upon retiring from Corrections Canada, he worked as a Commissionaire at Highland View Regional Hospital and Northern Telecom. Wilson was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 10, the Cumberland Twirlers, Bethany United Church, and the local Memory Club. He enjoyed bowling on a regular basis with his friends and being outdoors. In particular, he liked to golf and found great pleasure in fishing and hunting with family members, and gardening. Wilson is survived by his wife of 72 years, Vera (Thompson) Smith, daughter Norma Joyce (Daniel) Hurley, son Wilson Jr.(Sandra) Smith and sister Doris Patterson. He is survived by grandchildren Denise (Dorn), Alan and Arnold Hurley and Trista - Dawn (Black) and several great grandchildren. Memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Bethany United Church, Thomson Station, N.S. with Rev. Gary MacDougall officiating and a private family committal to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethany United Church.
