It is with great sadness that we, the family of Neil Burroughs announce his death. Neil passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, Dec. 17, 1933, he was the son of the late Neil J. and Catherine (Steele) Burroughs.
Neil served in the Korean War (1951-54) and was a member of the Canadian Guard. He retired from the Black Watch Battalion. Neil was awarded the UNS Medal and the Korean Medal of Appreciation. He was a member of the RCL Branch 78, Dominion. Neil will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues at the Cape Breton Development Corporation where he worked for 35 years. Neil was employed at No. 26, Lingan, Phalen and Prince Mine. He was a former member of the Dominion Fire Department and he also served on the parish council and was an active member of St. Eugene's Church, Dominion.
Neil and his wife, Carmel, spent many summers in Cheticamp; where his presence will be greatly missed from the campsite. He was a longtime Blue Jays and Red Wings fan. But mostly, Neil will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather with a great sense of humour and a strong commitment to his family.
Neil is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carmel (Nicholson) Burroughs; three sons, Joey (Theresa), Tarbot, Johnnie (Dea), Glace Bay, Brian (Brenda), Tarbot; four daughters, Anne Marie (Jim) Fletcher, Dominion, Francine (Steve) Fortune, Bedford, Cathy Burroughs, Glace Bay, and Leanna (Steve) Hartigan, Ben Eoin. He is survived by two sisters, Sharon Hubeny, Cecilia Bailey; brother-in-law, Joseph (Theresa) Nicholson; longtime friends, Jackie and Sharon Nicholson; numerous nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn his death are 20 grandchildren, David, Shellie, Jennifer, Courtney, Chris, Joey, Cory, Krista, Lesleyann, Jordon, Luke, Justin, Lisa, Keith, Brandon, Craig, Christina, Tim, Shannon, Steven and nine great-grandchildren, Marissa, Ethan, Jackson, Matthias, Madyson, Brandon, Nolan, Courtney and Keegan.
Neil was predeceased by his parents, daughter, Shelly, son, Neil Francis Jr., brother, Joey and a sister, Kay.
Visitation will be held at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Daniel Boudreau will be held in St. Eugene's Church on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Legion members are asked to form an honour guard at the church in memory of their departed brother. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the parish hall.
