It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maynard C. Sharpe, 83, of Tower Road, Glace Bay. Maynard passed away peacefully Monday, May 25, 2009, at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility.
Maynard was born in Glace Bay and was the son of the late James and Bertha (Brown) Sharpe.
He was employed with Nova Scotia Power at the Seaboard Power Plant, retiring after 41 years of service.
Maynard was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas throughout Europe. He was a member of Branch No. 3 Legion. He was a founding member of Branch No. 119 Legion, Tower Road. He also was a founding member of Tower Road fire department.
He enjoyed playing the fiddle, loved the outdoors, especially hunting, in his earlier years. He was a jack of all trades and master of all. He could turn his hand to any given task and was always willing to assist others. Maynard was a licensed photographer and enjoyed this very much. He also was an avid reader and book collector. He had a great sense of humour.
He will be sadly missed and not forgotten by family and friends.
Maynard is survived by his loving children, Patricia Turner, Ottawa, Barbara (Paul) Thorburn, St. John’s, N.L., and Kippy (Karen) Sharpe, Birch Grove; brother, Jim, Toronto. Also surviving are cherished grandchildren, Lisa, Adam, Keelin, Elizabeth, James and great-grandchildren, Kiara and Brooke.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Carmella ‘Mella’ (MacLean), brother, Bert, sister, Mamie Warren.
Visitation for Maynard Sharpe will held Thursday, May 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will held 2 p.m., Friday, May 29 at St. Mary’s Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Fev Arnold officiating. Cremation will follow. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
