It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon ‘Gordie’ Buchanan, 83 of Gardiner Mines, on May 25, 2009 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
A lifelong resident of Gardiner Mines, he was a son of the late Thomas and Margaret (McNeil) Buchanan. Gordon was a member of St. James parish, Gardiner Mines. He worked for the Cape Breton Development Corp., retiring after 45 years of service. He will be remembered as loving the outdoors, taking long walks, fishing and gardening. He will also be remembered as a devoted family man who always waited for the company of his children and grandchildren. Gordon will be sorely missed and will always be in the hearts of his family, especially his grandchildren who were his pride and job.
Surviving are his wife, Bernardita ‘Deats’ (Burke); his daughters, Karen Black (Kevin), Sydney River, Paula Weatherby (John), Marion Bridge, Kelly Baldwin (Troy), Scotchtown; sons, Blair (Cheryl), Antigonish, Colin (Diane), Gardiner Mines. Also surviving are his daughter-in-law, RoseMary Buchanan, Brantford, Ont.; one sister, Katherine Deveaux, Toronto; brothers, Hughie, Glace Bay and Willie (Babes), New Waterford; seven grandchildren, Chantel Buchanan, Melissa and Jeremy Buchanan, Bethany and Cale Buchanan and his twin granddaughters, Kayla and Breanna Baldwin.
Besides his parents, Gordon was predeceased by his son, Darren; two sisters, Anna and Clara and brothers, Michael, Tom and Danny.
Visitation for Gordon Buchanan will be held Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at St. James Church, Gardiner Mines with Fr. Gerald Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
