SUTHERLAND-Mrs. Florence Emma, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend passed away with her family by her side at Victoria Hospital on Friday, May 22, 2009. Mom was born at home, in Overland, Saskatchewan on October 3rd,1920. Mom was raised on a farm in the Lake Alma Saskatchewan area. At the age of twelve, she moved with her parents on horseback to Snowden, Saskatchewan. It was there at a young age she met the man, who would become the love of her life. The Second World War came between her and her husband to be, and they were forced to wait until the war was over to at last become husband and wife. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. When the war ended, Mom met the troop train in Montreal, Quebec and she and her husband to be were at last able to begin their lives together. On July 18, 1945, Mom married our father, George Mutrie Sutherland. From this union they had four very lucky children. Together, they farmed at Snowden, later moving to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.Mom was a devoted wife and mother. Her greatest love in life was her family. Mom had many friends of all ages, which were all special to her. With her husband and her family, they enjoyed camping, travelling, and fishing. Mom was famous for her fabulous garden and flowers. She was a person, who loved to plant and watch things grow. We probably will never meet anyone with the thumb as green as hers. Mom loved to cook and bake for her family and her many friends. Food was her hospitality. Mom and Dad loved music and loved to dance and play cards with their friends. On August the 29th,1971 Mom realized a lifetime dream, after her four children were grown, she graduated at the top of her class as a nurse. While her children were young she was a stay at home Mom, who worked hard sewing, cooking, baking, growing huge gardens, making a wonderful home for her family. Mom worked for many years at the Holy Family Hospital before and after she became a nurse. Mom's days were filled with sharing, her years were filled with caring, and her life was filled with a love that she freely gave. She was President of the Home and School Association, where her children attended school, for many years. She was one of the founding members of Calvary United Church, where she worshipped our God all her years in Prince Albert. Mom was President for many years of the United Church Women's Group, which recently honoured her with a Life Time Membership. She was also honoured this past winter with a Lifetime Canadian Legion Membership. A survivor of Cancer in 1982, Mom worked many hours for Can Surmount and enjoyed the many friends she made with the group. Happily Mom lived her 88 years independently in her own home, still caring for herself and others. A brief illness took her to be with our Lord and to join her husband in heaven.
