SCOTT, Kenneth Frank, Q.O.R. D-Day Veteran

At Truro, Nova Scotia, on May 27, 2009, Ken, beloved husband of Jeanne (nee Jenkins) and loving father of Barry (Susan), Janet (Jerry Ashe) and Jill (Henry Smit). Predeceased by his grandson Gordon, Ken was the cherished grandfather of Carolyn (Ed), Sherri, Rob (Jen), Scott (Kim), Katie, Erin (Anastasia), Neill, Meggie (Matthew), Laura and Emma and great-grandfather of Gordon, Krista, Amber, Sadie and Rylan. Ken was one of the last surviving members of the "first wave" Queen’s Own Rifles attack force that landed on Juno Beach in the early hours of June 6, 1944. He lost many good friends that day, but Ken survived his injuries and was able to rejoin his comrades in August 1944. His remaining military duty was served in the campaign to liberate Holland. He always kept faith with his fallen Q.O.R. comrades, especially on the anniversary of D-Day and on Remembrance Day. Except for his years spent away at war, Ken lived his first 81 years in Toronto. He worked as a carpenter and was a competitive baseball and hockey player in his younger days. He later became an avid golfer and curler until a disabling stroke ended his playing days at the age of 72. In 2002, he and Jeanne bravely made the move to Parkland Estates in Truro, where they have lived ever since. Ken embraced every stage of his long life with enthusiasm and showed his children and grandchildren the value of facing life’s challenges with courage and a smile. He retained his wit and sense of humor until his final days. He will be greatly missed by friends and family in both Toronto and Truro, and by the caring staff of Parkland and Earth Angels. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service will be held at the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro at noon on Saturday May 30, followed by a funeral service at St. John’s Anglican Church, 23 Church St., Truro, at 3:00 pm with a reception to follow in Kaulback Hall.
