Cecil Murray

MURRAY - Cecil George Murray of Swift Current SK, passed away peacefully with family at his side at the Prairie Pioneer Lodge, on Friday August 20, 2010 at the age of 88 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 14 years, Kathy (Tiena) Murray and several nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his first wife, Margaret, and all of his siblings, Isabelle, Russell, Tom, Ed, Percy, Leonard, Ernie, Jack, Irene, Nelse and an infant sister, Ida. Cecil was born June 13,1922, the ninth child of Walter and Ethel Murray who homesteaded in the Darmody district. Cec often told the story that as a young boy he nearly drowned in a dug out while under the "watchful" care of his brothers and sisters but survived after being fished out, wrapped in a blanket and popped in the oven to warm up. After his close call, Cecil enjoyed life in a large family who, together, worked hard, played ball, curled, hunted and attended every dance in the area. His love of sports included horseshoes for which he won many trophies. Along side some of his brothers, Cec worked in coal mines in Alberta and for CP Railway. Afterwards Cec farmed for Bob and Elsie Hamon at Parkbeg for many years and became a favorite "uncle" for all of their grandchildren. In 1978 Cec married Margaret Hannah of Moose Jaw and became caretaker of Zion United Church. In his usual fashion, there was never a speck of dust in the church or a maintenance job left undone. Fellow employees became good friends and were always entertained with Cecil's stories and jokes. Marg and Cec traveled regularly and enjoyed a full social life with family and friends. After Margaret's passing Cec married Kathy Warren of Neville, SK in 1996. While living in Moose Jaw and Swift Current he and Kathy tended beautiful gardens, enjoyed a friendly rivalry with daily card games and kept a busy schedule of visiting friends and family near and far. Along with the many blessings of being Kathy's husband, Cecil felt very fortunate in being "Grampa" Cecil to Kathy's great grandchildren. Even in the last few months Cec enjoyed an occasional dance, his many loving visits with Kathy and the wonderful care he received from the staff at the Lodge. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. For those who wish, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Society in lieu of flowers. A private family graveside service will be held in Moose Jaw at Sunset Cemetery. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
