It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Adrian Curtis MacKinnon of Whycocomagh; formerly of Sydney Mines. He died peacefully at the Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck early Saturday morning, May 30, 2009.
Adrian was born in Sydney Mines on January 7, 1925 to the late Daniel & Katie MacKinnon. Adrian was a coal miner, working first in the Princess Colliery. Later, he worked as a fisherman but an injury forced him to change jobs and he finished his working career as an employee of Canada Steamship Lines.
He was a proud member of the Cape Breton Highlanders and fought courageously on the European front in WWII, being instrumental in the liberation of Holland in 1945. Earlier in his infantry career, he turned age 18 while crouching in a trench in Italy.
He is survived by his son Adrian who resides in Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands; and two grandchildren - Kurt and Kayla in British Columbia; a brother Conrad in Ontario; and his brother Donald in Sydney Mines. He is also survived by his nephew Alan (Ruth) MacKinnon in Whycocomagh; with whom he resided before being hospitalized for a hip injury; and numerous other nephews and nieces. Adrian will be remembered for his great sense of humor, love of family & complete integrity.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his loving wife Olive Mae; brothers Edison, and John D; sisters Annabelle Young, Elvira Gibbons, Irene MacKinnon, and 3 brothers in infancy.
As per Adrian's wishes, his earthly body was cremated. There will be no visitation nor funeral service. He will be interred beside his wife, Olive in Brookside Cemetery in Sydney Mines.
