It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Raymond 'Moe' Campbell, 72, of New Waterford on August 25, 2010 at his summer home in West Lake Ainslie.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late John 'Fess' and Mary (Hannigan) Campbell. In his early years, Moe was very athletic and was involved in high school gymnastics, appearing on television for several competitions. From 1956 - 1986, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Radar Tech. He travelled the world while in the service and competed as a boxer, eventually becoming middleweight champion. Moe also played rugby and football for many years. He loved to hunt and fish and was an active member of the New Waterford Fish and Games Association. Moe was active (50 years) and a lifetime member of the Army, Navy, Airforce, Unit 217, New Waterford and a member of the Naval Vets, where he enjoyed being with his shipmates. He loved to spend his summers at his bungalow in Lake Ainslie and his winters travelling to Florida with his sister Helen and brother-in-law Philip and many dear friends. Moe spent many years down in Hayes River, also known as Campbell Ville, and enjoyed being with all the campers. He was very passionate in writing poetry and won two awards for his writings. He will always be remembered for his singing and being the life of any party he attended. Moe was a very passionate, kind and warm hearted man and was a dear uncle and granduncle to many nieces and nephews that he loved and cared about in a very special way. Moe was also a guardian to a grandnephew, Steven MacDonald, whom he loved dearly like a son of his own.
He will be sadly missed by his sister, Helen, who looked up to Moe as her hero and a brother she could always depend on. Moe had a very special relationship with his brother Johnny 'Putt'; they loved each other dearly. He had a very special friendship with his brother-in-law, Philip MacDonald. They relied on each other and shared many special times together. Moe also spent some good times with his dear friend, Wally Wareham. Surviving are his sister, Helen (Philip) MacDonald; brother John 'Putt' (Valerie) Campbell; many nieces and nephews; aunts, Sister Theresa Hannigan, Effie Campbell; stepchildren, Linda, Steven, Leonard, James, and Sharon and their families.
Moe was predeceased by brothers Joey and Vincy; wife Charlotte (Hogan) Campbell; special niece and godchild, Laurie (MacDonald) MacPherson; grandnephew Vincent Campbell; nephew Joseph Campbell, and sister-in-law, Anne (MacCormick) Campbell.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Aug. 29, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass to celebrate Moe's life will take place Monday, Aug. 30, 2010 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., with Father Doug MacDonald officiating. Cremation will follow. A luncheon will be held at the Army, Navy, Airforce, Unit 217, New Waterford, immediately following the funeral mass. All are welcome to attend.
