Margaret Elizabeth Canning
Margaret Elizabeth Canning 96 years of Pugwash and formerly of Springhill, passed away surrounded by family in the East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, in the early morning hours of Thursday, May 28, 2009. Born April 16, 1913, in Springhill, she was the eldest child of Cecil Vanderbilt and Margaret Ann (Scott) Rogers.
In her teens, she worked at an apple factory in Bridgetown, NS, making cider and vinegar. In the early 1930's, Margaret met and married Thomas Orville Canning in Springhill, where together they raised three children. For more than 12 years, while her husband was confined to his bed by rheumatoid arthritis, Margaret lovingly nursed him. She loved to dance and read, and she was skilled in knitting and crocheting. She actively enjoyed Springhill Seniors' Club events and participated in many bus trips. Margaret lived independently well into her late 80's, enjoying frequent trips to visit her children and their families.
She will be sadly missed by her children, daughters, Jewel (Ken) Spence, Bedford and Patricia (Murray) Gilroy, Springhill/Heather Beach; son, Thomas (Barbara) Canning, Fernie, BC; nine grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, thirteen great great grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Kendall, Pugwash; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Thomas; sisters, Eva and Elta; brothers, George, Lesley, Cecil and Leonard.
Arrangements have been entrusted to A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, NS (902 597 2361). Cremation has taken place. Visiting will take place on Saturday June 6, 2009 from 1 - 3 pm followed immediately at 3:00 pm by a Memorial Service both held from the Funeral Home, Reverend Meggin King officiating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill.
Donations in Margaret's memory may be made to the East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, or a charity of choice would be appreciated.
