It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sara Jessie (MacNeil) O’Handley at the Northside General Hospital on Friday evening, June 5, 2009. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Born in Boisdale, Nov. 5, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Rory Hector and Kate (Morrison) MacNeil.
She was a member of St. Andrew’s parish, Boisdale, and a past member of the ladies auxiliary. While raising her family, she was involved in many parish activities and was the telephone switchboard operator for several years for the local area. She was an avid reader and liked to keep up to date on the world news. Her favourite times were family gatherings to celebrate special occasions.
She is survived by sons, Leonard (Mom’s caregiver), Boisdale, Roy (Cecilia), Prime Brook, John, Halifax, and Gerard (Dena), Port Hawkesbury; daughters, Anne Marie Donovan, Big Pond, and Kathleen MacNeil (John Allan), Sydney. She is also survived by 31 grand and great-grandchildren.
Including her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Roddie, sisters, Annie Soy (Bernard), Sister Mary and Sister Katherine MacNeil (St. Martha’s), brothers, Hector, Ralph and James (in infancy), special cousin, Jimmy Donnelly, daughter-in-law, Valerie O’Handley, and son-in-law, Joe Donovan.
Special thank you to Dr. M. Hutchinson, Dr. P. Creighton, and Dr. M. Igoe and the nursing staff of 2nd and 4th NSH. A special thank you to County Homemakers, Lori, Bernadette and Denise.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 9 at St. Andrew’s Church, Boisdale, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Paul Abbass officiating and burial following in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be given to the Boisdale Cemetery Fund at 1769 Frenchvale Rd., Frenchvale, B2A 4E2, or charity of one’s choice.
