On Saturday, June 6, 2009, Gerry passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loving family and friends.
Born in Bishops Falls, N.L., Gerry was the son of the late John and Marion Hannon.
Gerry grew up in St. John’s, N.L., and moved throughout Canada during his career as inspector with the Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation, settling in Sydney in 1990. After retiring with CMHC, Gerry spent a few years working as an inspector with Cape Breton Regional Municpality. He then retired in 2007.
Gerry was a gentle and loving husband to wife Carolyn, proud and devoted father to son, Rod; daughter, Jolette and stepson, Jeff Spencer. He is also survived by his twin brother, Roy; brother, Harold and sister, Marjorie. Gerry was a great ‘Pops’ to his grandchildren, Austin, Jacob and Alec.
Gerry’s zest for life, contagious sense of humour and ready smile was an inspiration to all. He had a strength of spirit that brought joy to his life and will be his legacy.
Gerry loved to garden, golf, fish and play horseshoes. He always had a project on the go and loved to go online and fly his planes with friends all over the world. Best of all, he loved to bring family and friends together and entertain them with his saxophone, piano and jokes.
Donations in Gerry’s memory may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 9 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will take place 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 10 at Our Lady of Fatima, Sydney River. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

A farewell is necessary before you can meet again.
And meeting again, after moments or lifetime, is certain for those who are friends.â€
