AMHERST It is with great sadness the family of Garnet Douglas Porter, age 88, of Amherst, NS, announce his passing at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Thursday, June 4, 2009, with his family by his side.

Born in Hastings, NS, he was a son of the late Reuben and Gertrude (Brooks) Porter.
Garnet worked at Enheat for a number of years prior to his retirement. An avid hockey fan, he enjoyed card games with his family and friends. In younger years he loved his garden, which he shared with all, and was a big harness racing fan. He was an adherent of the Amherst Wesleyan Church.

A man whose family was his pride and joy, he will be sadly missed by his wife of 56 years, Mary(Gilroy); sons, Brian (Nancy), Mississauga, ON, Randy (Wanda), Amherst, NS, Ronald (Melany) Brampton, ON, Kendall (Linda), Riverview, NB; daughters, Marlene Arsenault and Ellen (Wayne) Myatt , both of Amherst, NS, Ruby (Rex Steeves) Hunter, Stony Creek, NB and Joanne (Sam) Fife, Moncton, NB; 12 grandchildren, Kim, Karrie, Amanda, Brad, Jonathan, Tanya, Jeremy, Andrew, Katie, Candice, Justin and Chris; step grandchildren, Melissa, Jason, Nichole and Melissa C; 5 great grandchildren; a brother, Owen (Shirley), Ingersol, ON and many nieces and nephews.

He was precedeased by son-in-law Terry Arsenault, brothers, Gordon, Layton, Clinton, Merle, Carman, Kenneth and Austin.

Garnet's remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (667-8777), with visitation Sunday from 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Amherst Wesleyan Church, Cornwall Ave. on Monday, June 8, 2009 at 2 pm, Rev. Raymond Fancy officiating. Burial in the Warren Cemetery.
