NEW GLASGOW – It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Leonard MacDonald Jardine on June 7, 2009.
Born on March 29, 1923 in White Hill, Pictou County, he was the son of the late William and Jean (MacDonald) Jardine.
He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 137, Hopewell, NS. Leonard was employed with C.N. Rail for 37 years, first as a Brakeman - Conductor out of Stellarton and then as the Rules Instructor and Transportation Training Officer for the Atlantic Region in Moncton, NB. Following retirement in 1987, he returned to New Glasgow.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow where he served as Elder, Clerk of Session and Roll Clerk and was a member of the Senior Choir and Men’s Choir. He was also a former Elder of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Riverview, NB. He served as Director and was a member of the Stellarton Male Choir and was a well-known soloist.
He was a member of Caledonia Lodge #28, Hopewell, NS, and Past Grand Master of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of the Atlantic Provinces and Past Grand Representative of the Sovereign Grand Lodge. He was also a member of Wawbeek Encampment #12, Hopewell and Canton Dryden #2, Westville, Past Department Adjutant and Past Department Commander of the Atlantic Provinces. He was a member of Silver Light Rebekah Lodge #79, Hopewell, and a recipient of the Grand Decoration of Chivalry.
He was presented with the highest award given by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Meritorious Service Award. He served as president of the Maritime Odd Fellows Home, Pictou, NS and was a strong supporter of the Home. He was instrumental in negotiating the approval of the new Odd Fellows Home with the Department of Health. He was an active community volunteer, including serving as Campaign Chairman for the Canadian Cancer Society and delivering Meals on Wheels. A man of great faith, Leonard loved helping people and cherished the company of family and friends. We will miss his ever-present smile and joyful laugh.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Ethel (MacIntosh); daughters, Leanne (Matthew Tweedie), Fredericton, NB; and Laurel (Christoph – currently serving in Afghanistan) Rankin, Kingston, Ontario; and son, Stephen (Lisa), Quispamsis, NB; five grandchildren: Emily, Kathleen and Andrea Rankin, Elliot and Ava Jardine; and a special nephew, Cameron (Joyce) Jardine, Westville, NS. Also survived by sisters-in-law: Margaret MacIntosh, Muriel MacIntosh, Lila MacIntosh and Etta Hirtle; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Cameron and Thomas; and sister, Janet (Jen) Marshall.
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 10th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow, on Thursday, June 11th at 2 p.m., with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery.
Family flowers only please. Memorial donations to the Canadian Bible Society, First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
