Edgar MacKinnon, 93, a resident of the Cove Guest Home, Sydney, passed away suddenly with his wife by his side, on Sunday, June 7, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Whitney Pier, he was the son of the late Jack and Elizabeth (Mame) MacKinnon.
Edgar worked with his father as a barber in Whitney Pier until he joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1942. He served for four years, mainly in Europe, beginning in England where he met his wife of 65 years, Beryl. Returning to Sydney in 1946, he began a small radio business in partnership with Tommy Hardigan. This subsequently expanded to become Ashby Radio & TV Services located on the corner of Townsend and Prince Streets in Sydney, from which he retired in 1984.
Edgar’s favourite pastimes were spending quality time with family and friends at their bungalow or boating on Sydney Harbour and the Bras D’Or Lakes. He was a longtime member of the Dobson Yacht Club and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney.
Edgar was predeceased by his youngest son, David and sisters, Dorothy, Frances and Aileen Chase.
He was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by his wife, Beryl (Newberry); sons, Stewart, Vancouver, B.C. and Jeff, Belleville, Ont., as well as their families.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel at a later date. Private family interment will take place at Eastmount Cemetery, Whitney Pier.
