It is with deep sadness that we, the family of Elizabeth 'Betty' McIntyre announce her passing on Oct. 2, 2010 at the Glace Bay Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Glace Bay, Feb. 17, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Adelaide (MacIntrye) Aucoin, and was a member of Holy Family Church, McKay's Corner in Glace Bay.
Betty graduated from Provincial Normal College in Truro, N.S., and taught for several years in the Glace Bay Public School System. Betty's true calling was as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great-grandmother.
In her earlier years Betty was a talented piano and fiddle player and was an accomplished highland dancer. She also enjoyed bowling, baking and sewing. She was very active socially at her residence, Sterling Villa, 55 Minto St., Glace Bay, where she served as secretary of their social club. Betty will be remembered by her friends at Sterling Villa for her quick wit and her dry sense of humour.
Betty is survived by her two daughters, Anne Marie (Earl) Campbell, Glace Bay, Teresa Walker (George Pratt), Toronto; seven sons, Michael (Mae), Pictou, N.S., Rod, Ontario, David (Sandy), Mineville, Harold (Janice), Sydney, Mel (Stella), Singapore, Cyril (Olivia), Hamilton, Brendon (Debbie), Glace Bay. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren who loved Grandma dearly; a sister Margie Merrick, Medicine Hat, Alta.; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special pal, Cujo.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roderick 'Dick' McIntyre in 1988, as well as two brothers, Harold and Gerard, and a sister, Josephine Aucoin.
Visitation for Betty will be held Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A mass celebrating Betty's life will be held at Holy Family Church MacKay's Corner, Thursday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m., with interment in the parish cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church hall, all are welcome.
Donations in Betty's memory may be made to the St. Joseph's Holy Family Cemetery fund.
