Ross Allison Howe died after a lengthy illness at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on the morning of October 8, 2010. He was born May 23, 1931 in Welsford. The son of the late Percy and Francis (Woods) Howe. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 62 years Lois Marie (Reicker) HHis three children; Susanne Mitchell (Stan Fielding), Kenneth (Linda Gray) and Edward. His seven grandchildren; Dwight and Shane (Lisa Doiron) Mitchell, Samantha, Melissa and Jessica (Matthew Yeomans) Howe and Tyler and Branden Howe. Great grandchildren; Derek Doiron, Hailey Lynn Howe and Tucker Yeomans. Survived also by sister Sadie (James) McCracken, sister-in-law Olivia Howe, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers; Edward, Gordon and sister; Mildred (Bert) Queen and son-in-law; Wayne Mitchell.
He worked, drove and played hard all his life. He spent his younger years in Armstrong's Corner (now part of CFB Gagetown). He often spoke of making money hauling water for the horses at the first Queen's County horse haul, and later hauling water to the men constructing the Queen's county fair grounds. In the early '50's they moved to McAdam where he had a wood working shop and built boats. Later moving to Saint John, he built office buildings, bowling alleys, furniture stores and more. He also owned and operated the Terrace Motel at the same time. In 1960, at the age of 29, Telegraph Journal wrote an article about being the youngest man with the largest crew. In 1970, he came to Fredericton, where he built Howarth Acres (Beaverdam), Evergreen Park (Fredericton North) and Tamarack Park (Oromocto). He built Storage World and both mini malls in New Maryland and Beaverdam, along with many other subdivisions, homes, and warehouses. Throughout his life he owned a stock car, a motorcycle, a snowmobile, and a model A. He raised purebred herefords, and Percheron horses. At the age of 63, he drove his first competitive 6 horse hitch into the show ring. He was the only two time consecutive winner of the Atlantic Lotto Six Horse Hitch Classic. He was a proud member of the Canadian Percheron Association, New Brunswick Draft Horse Association, Atlantic Home Warranty and Builders Association, and Base Gagetown History Association. He was a hard worker, a faithful husband and father that lived for his family.
Visitation will be held at Mcadam's Funeral Home on Sunday, October 10th, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held in the J. A. Mcadam Memorial Chapel on Monday, October 11th, 2010 at 11:00 am. Rev. Larry Matthews will officiate. Interment will be in the Bayview Cemetery in Hatfield Point, NB. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to Bayview Cemetery or the charity of the donor's choice. On-line condolences may be made at www.mcadamsfh.com.
