Passed on: October 13th, 2010

The death of Sara Millicent (Parks) Calder occurred at Passamaquoddy Lodge, St. Andrews, NB on October 13, 2010, where she had been a resident for a little over four years. Sara was born and raised in Breadalbane, NB, outside of St. George, NB, to the late Robert and Ethel (Seamans) Parks. In her late teens she moved to Deer Island, NB, for work in the sardine factory. It was here she met and later married her husband, Earle Douglas Calder. Sara remained at home raising children for several years. While raising her children, she and her husband ran the telephone switchboard for Deer Island from their home. When her children became older, she again went to work in the sardine factory. Family had always been very important and so she again left the factory after a few years to tend to her grandchildren. In addition to her own children and grandchildren, she became "Ma" to many of the neighbourhood children as well. Sara had a strong faith in God. She was the inspiration to her children and family to attend church as she was a Sunday School teacher for many years at the Fairhaven Baptist Church. Her death may end this life, but not the hope she has always had for eternity. Sara is survived by one son, Douglas Calder of Fairhaven, NB, two daughters: Sharon (Michael) Hartford of Lords Cove, NB, and Jackie (Brian) Mitchell of Fairhaven. She is also survived by grandchildren: Gordon Weatherby of Dorn Ridge, NB, Jill (Norman) Conley and Joey (Mandy) Mitchell both of Deer Island, great grandchildren: Rob Stephen, Timothy Weatherby, Cameron Conley and Mallory and Sawyer Mitchell, one sister, Alberta (Carson) Cooke of L'Etang, NB, sisters in law: Jennie D'Entrement, Mildred Parks, Kathryn McNeill, Barbara McConkey and Edith Calder. She is also survived by a great many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, Sara was predeceased by her husband, Earle Calder, newborn son, Earle Douglas Calder, granddaughter, Sara Jane Weatherby, son in law, Glen Hatt, brothers: Robert (Lorena), Douglas (Bertha), Hugh (Wilma), Raymond, Tilley (Mildred) and Hazen (Merle) Parks, as well as sisters: Rose McClure, Ethel (Forrest) Miner, Lila (Randall) Leeman and Lillian (Harold) Calder. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff of the Passamaquoddy Lodge for not only the wonderful care they provided to their mother but for the care and compassion they have shown towards the family during Sara's final days.
Resting at the Fairhaven Baptist Church, Fairhaven, NB, from where the service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Maurice Hatfield officiating, followed by the interment at the Fairhaven Community Cemetery at Calder's Head, NB. Following the interment, a reception will be held at the church. Visiting will be held at the church on Friday from 7 to 9 pm. In Sara's memory donations to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
