Burrill Forshay "Sam" Bigelow - 89, formerly of Habitant, Kings County, passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2010 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born on August 8, 1921 in Blomidon, he was a son of the late William and Mary (Newcombe) Bigelow. He worked on the family farm and mill in Blomidon for many years and served as a Merchant Marine during the Second World War. He also fished with Coffill's and drove a truck for Scotian Gold. He later became chief engineer of Scotian Gold and Canard Poultry, from where he retired in 1986. He owned and operated his small Cape Islander boat and enjoyed many hours fishing on the Minas Basin and spending time in Parrsboro with family and friends. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Habitant Branch No. 73, Canning and enjoyed listening to Down East and fiddle music. He dearly loved his grandchildren and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Valerie Taylor; a daughter Doris (John) Davidson; four grandchildren, Troy (Karen), Rhonda (Jeff), Treena (Andy) and Tyler (Paula); six great grandchildren, Cameron, Carter, Rayna, Kayla, Kelsey and Rhye; a sister, Ona Spicer (the late Mike); a brother, Dwight "Skip" (Arley); many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Burdette and his wife, Lillian. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There was no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 22, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Burial will take place at a later date in the Habitant Cemetery. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Evergreen for their wonderful care and to Mary Anne Doherty-Fleet, Reverend Robert Cross and Reverend Sterling Gosman for your care, kindness and compassion. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or Evergreen Home for Special Care.
