Fred Philip Whitman - 94, passed away Sunday, October 17, 2010 in the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Dartmouth on July 23, 1916, he was the son of the late Abdon and Catherine (Hartling) Whitman. He spent 50 years in the hardware business. He worked at the Peoples Hardware Store until the war and was then employed at the Armoury and the Dockyard. In 1945, he had a managerial position at Reardon's Hardware on Dutch Village Road and in 1957 Fred and his wife, Lucy opened Whitman's Hardware Store in Bedford. In 1982, they retired and moved to New Minas. Fred will be remembered for his kindness and sense of humour. He will be missed. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah; a daughter-in-law, Gwen and grandsons, Ian and Eric. He was predeceased by his wife, Lucy (Isenor); a son, Ron; a daughter, Nancy; a brother, Avard; two sisters, Eva and Helen. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. There was no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 22, 2010 in St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, Archdeacon Lynn Uzans officiating. Burial took place in the Garden of Rest Cemetery, Parish of St. James, Kentville. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to St. James Anglican Church or the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring staff and volunteers at the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building.
