NEW GLASGOW – It is with grieving hearts that the family of Nancy A. McRae, 73, of New Glasgow, announces her passing on June 16, 2009, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital.
Born on March 11, 1936, Nancy was the youngest child of the late Roy and Carrie Bennett of New Glasgow.
In 1953, Nancy graduated from New Glasgow High School. She then attended Acadia University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1956 and a Bachelor of Education degree in 1957. Nancy taught at Hampton Gray Memorial School in Shearwater for several years. Nancy had a deep love of music and singing throughout high school, university, and in her community. She was an active participant in chorale groups and her church choir. Nancy lived in Mahone Bay for 17 years and was a vital member of her community. Her love of cooking was well known, and her recipes were highly coveted by both family and friends. In 1979, Nancy and her family moved to the United States. She became active in P.E.O., an international philanthropic and educational organization for women, holding several officer positions including president. Throughout her adult life, Nancy’s children were always her first priority. Nancy is joyfully reunited with her son, Stephen Keddy, who predeceased her in 1996.
She is survived by her husband, Gerald McRae; her daughters: Susan (Steven) Saucier; Sharon (John) Rogers; Deirdre (Ronald) Martin; seven grandchildren; sister: J. Doreen Bennett; brother, Richard (Nancy) Bennett; three nephews; three great-nieces; two great-nephews.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service 2 p.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church New Glasgow, with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Nancy requested that donations be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital or the Sandbar Mental Health Endowment Fund through the Aberdeen Hospital Foundation, New Glasgow.
