Dartmouth/New Glasgow - Lola Stuart (Fraser) MacKenzie, 90, Saint Vincent's Nursing Home, Halifax, formerly of Dartmouth, passed away Friday, November 5, 2010, in the home due to complications arising from long-term kidney failure and pneumonia.
Born May 25, 1920 and raised in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late George and Annie (Elliott) Fraser.
A graduate of New Glasgow High School, she attended Maritime Secretary College, Halifax. She worked in the Trenton Steel Works and later as church secretary in Grace United Church, Dartmouth.
She was active in church groups of the United Church in Bayfield, New Brunswick, Scotsburn and Dartmouth, and from 1975-2005 she was active in the congregational activities and groups of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Dartmouth, including the A.M.S. and as co-host of the Church’s Annual Spring and Fall Teas.
She and her family spent every summer and many weekends during spring and fall at their cottage on the former Elliott family farm property at Black Point, Pictou County. There she loved to sit and look at the water, sandbars and the view.
She is survived by her sons, Graeme, Dartmouth; Dr. Brian, Copenhagen, Denmark; granddaughter, Jessica; sisters, Pearl Baudoux, Riverton; Audrey (Raymond) MacQuarrie, New Glasgow; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Roy H. (born Trenton, Nova Scotia), brother, Douglas, and sister, Melda MacGregor.
Visitation 6-8 p.m. Monday, November 8 in R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service 11 a.m. Tuesday, November. 9 in First Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow, with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. Burial will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
Her warmth and kindness will be missed by family and friends. A memorial service for family and friends in Dartmouth and Halifax was held Sunday, November 7 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Dartmouth with Rev. Dr. P.A. (Sandy) McDonald officiating.
The family thanks all caregivers at St. Vincent’s Nursing Home and the Dickson Building, Halifax for their kindness, care and support during her many years of dialysis treatment.
