George is also survived by aunts, uncles and many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Bernie (1994) and Mary (1986) Bestrop. George was born on December 25, 1945 to Bernie and Mary Bestrop, the oldest of four siblings. He grew up on the family farm in the Morse district and resided there until his passing. He attended school at Rolling Plains & Morse School. George knew at a young age that he wanted to be a farmer and felt school was a waste of valuable time. It has been said that Mary had to chase him with a broom to school as he often hid in the ditch half way there. On May 27, 1972 he married Jackie Gardiner, at Swift Current, Saskatchewan. This union brought them two children, Jeff and Kristen. George was a wonderful father who always had time for his children. He was always interested in their activities. He was so proud of all their accomplishments and who they are today. George absolutely adored his grandchildren; they were his pride and joy. He had a unique and special bond with each one. Kelly - you were his quiet little lady, who liked helping with the cattle. The one who thought Grandpa should have a horse or two on the farm once again. Taylor - you always had an answer when Grandpa George teased. "I am not a turkey turd, I am Taylor the Bestrop". Colby - you are just like your dad, having already told Grandpa that you can drive the tractor and fix things too as you have tools. Kelly, Taylor and Colby - how fortunate you were to be such a big part of his life. He also had a special bond with Shauna, who made him shortbread cookies every Christmas. Farming was George's life as he farmed all of his life along with his dad, Bernie, brother, Bill and now son Jeff. He was a man of the land who took pride in his wheat fields, hay crops and cattle. He was a proud dad, when Jeff, decided to become the 4th generation on the land and when Kristen decided to study agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan. Family and the land were what really mattered to George. He recognized the importance of being community minded. He served as a councilor for the RM of Morse for 10 years. His sense of humor and quick wit were always with him. He was an avid sports fan, and played ball, hockey and curled. He spent many years coaching Jeff's ball teams and enjoyed attending his hockey games. Most of George's holidays away from home consisted of the Swift Current fair with Kristen for 4H and many towns across the province watching her curl. His life was a special gift and he will be missed and forever remembered by all who knew him. As Taylor stated "things are going to be different around here". A memorial service to pay tribute and celebrate George's life was held on Friday, November 12th at 2:00 pm from the Morse Community Hall. The interment service will take place at a later date. Donations may be made, if so desired, to the Herbert Emergency Medical Responders or to a charity of the donor's choice. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
