Shirley Carol Werenka, Truro, formerly of Alton, passed away suddenly Friday, June 19, 2009, in Cedarstone Enhanced Care.
Born in Yarmouth, she was a daughter of the late Charles Van Horne and Ruby (Van Horne) Newell.
Shirley worked as a personal care worker in her younger years and later knitted and crocheted many mittens and socks for her family and friends. She had a great sense of humour and loved a good joke.
Shirley is survived by her son, George (Martha), North Sydney; grandchildren, Robert (Wandalee), Hilden, Troy (Tracey Lee), Stewiacke, Stacey (Dawn Leigh), Truro, Trevor (Cindy), Hilden, Darren, North Sydney, Juanita ‘Nikki’ Cook, Truro; sisters, Lorraine (William) Lindsay, Stewiacke, Ramona (Wilfred) Brenton, Truro; brothers, Donald, Digby, Bob (Doris) Newell, New Brunswick; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, George, sisters, Betty, Norma, Ester and Barbara, brother, Charles.
A private graveside service was held in Pine Grove Cemetery, Stewiacke East, Rev. Larry Harrison officiated.
In memory of Shirley, donations may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia, Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of one’s choice are welcomed.
