Surrounded and tightly held by her family, Nancy passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
Born in Glace Bay, Nancy was the daughter of John E. ‘Jack’ and Philomena (Detcheverry) MacInnis, Steel’s Hill.
Nancy leaves behind her beloved boys, Tyler and Spencer Gouthro, at home. Nancy is also survived by sister, Brenda Doue (Paris Landry), Sydney Mines; brother, Blair, Glace Bay; cousin, Tammy Oulton (Jon), Grand Pre; and lifelong friend, Laura Lee Sharpe, Reserve Mines and “the Girls.†Nancy will be missed by so many special aunts, uncles and cousins.
Nancy is predeceased by maternal grandparents, Louis and Tilley Detcheverry and paternal grandparents, Catherine and John E. MacInnis
Nancy graduated from St. Michael’s High School in 1984, she went on to graduate from Cape Breton University in 1986 and received her bachelor of business administration from Acadia University in 1989. Nancy was president of the Accounting Society at Acadia University during 1988-89.
She went on to have a successful career with CRA in Sydney where she was not only employed, but a member of a family of professionals. During her employment with CRA she was active in her union role; she served as treasurer and vice-president for the local sub-group union committee of PIPSC.
Nancy was active in her community. She served on the board of directors for the Jewels and Gems Daycare and was very involved in the daycare’s move to Marion Street. Nancy also served as treasurer for St. Anne’s Elementary home and school committee from 2005 to 2010.
Nancy lived her life with dignity, loyalty and a love for others. The greatest testament to this is the multitude of people that will forever call her a “true friend.â€
Nancy asked that we express her sincere thanks to all those that took part in her care, in particular her aunt, Donna Boyer, Laura Lee Sharpe and the staff and physicians at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre, Palliative Care Services and VON Cape Breton.
In honouring Nancy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation for Nancy will be held Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, between 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, Nov. 25, 2010, 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church hall, all are welcome.
