Publicover, Alberta (Bertie) Olive, nee Burrell, of Truro, formerly of Halifax. It is with great sadness that the family announces her passing on November 23, 2010 at The Mira, Truro, following a lengthy illness. Born in Yarmouth on February 4, 1922, she is survived by her sons, Philip (Linda Wood) of Ottawa and Roy of Truro, her twin sister Roberta (Bob) Quinn of Sidney, BC, and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Warren, parents James Donald and Margaret (Munroe) Burrell, sister Dorothy Mains and her brother Andy Burrell. Until the last few years, she lived life to the fullest. Although family always came first, she was a dedicated and loyal volunteer. She was awarded a life membership in the Canadian Parapalegic Association NS Division for her her work with the Association. Involved in swimming at the provincial level, she was the founding President of Life Saving of NS, as an Examiner she taught swimming throughout the province, served for ten years on the Board of the NS Red Cross Water Safety and was also a Board member of the NS Amateur Swimming Association. She received the Canadian Red Cross Honour Citation in 1979. She had a long affiliation with the Halifax WYCA and YMCA where she taught physical education and also served as Executive Director of the Dartmouth YMCA. She served on the Boards of the the NS Camping Association and Partners for Care at the QE 11 Hospital, was a member of the International Women's Year Organizing Committee, and was active in her church as a Sunday School teacher for many years. In recognition for significant loyal and dedicated service to her community, she was the proud recipient of the Canada 125 Medal, the Queen's Jubilee Medal and the Venerable Order of St. John. At her request, her remains have been cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro.
