It is with great sadness that the family of Ethel Mayotta Smyth announce her peaceful passing on Sunday morning, November 28, 2010. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Howard; son, Ken (Elizabeth Fox), Truro; daughter, Carol (Vern) Horsman, Grand Manan; daughter, Valerie (Garth) Williams, Shortts Lake; daughter-in-law, Sharon Smyth, Shortts Lake; grandchildren, Jonathan, Jeremy, Jen, Carl, Sheri, Josh, Jake, Arielle, Greg, Jason, Matt; 20 great-grandchildren; brothers, Harvey and Jimmy; sisters, Carmen and Muriel; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by son, Brian; grandson, Steven; brothers, Stuart and Herman; sister, Evelyn. Born in Bury, Quebec on February 25, 1928 to Marjorie and Russell Dougherty, she was one of eight children. After spending many years in Quebec, Ethel moved to Nova Scotia in 1976 with her family. In her younger years, she worked as a florist and librarian and had a love of family and painting. After retirement, Howard and Ethel spent the next 22 winters in sunny Florida enjoying family and friends. Ethel will always be remembered for her wonderful stories and vigorous spirit. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 1st from 12 pm until time of the funeral service at 1:00 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Stewiacke East. Donations in Ethel's memory may be made to a charity of choice.
