Mr. Leblanc died peacefully Tuesday, June 23, 2009 surrounded by his family at the Northside Community Guest Home.
He was born into a family of nine on January 8, 1928 in Orleans, Ont. After 20 years of service with the Navy he relocated with his family to Sydney in 1965. He was one of the initial instructors to open the doors to cadets at the Canadian Coast Guard College in Pt. Edward. There he was employed for 33 years as physical education department head and cadet liaison. His contribution was enormous to the college and community.
In retirement he enjoyed travelling, golfing, gardening, berry picking and daily visits to Tim Horton’s at the Sydney River Plaza. Dad lived his days with integrity, hard work and courage. He loved life and was not afraid to challenge or embrace it. He will be remembered by the many people whose lives he has touched and he will continue to always be an inspiration to his family.
Gerry will be dearly missed by his wife, Claire; five children, Diane, Suzanne, Sandra (Dan McNabb), Robert (‘Snooks’) and Mitch (Jenn); six grandchildren, Christina, Kevin, Katelyn, Scott, Colleen and Josh and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Gertrude and two brothers, Fernand and Norman.
He was predeceased by many brothers.
Visitation for the late Mr. Leblanc will be held Friday, June 26, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 11 a.m.
