(1923-2010). Passed peacefully away after a short illness and surrounded by members of his family, at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital on 4 December, 2010, Michael M. Anderson, retired geologist. Predeceased by son Neil. He is survived by his wife Betty; daughters: Ann (Jim), St. John's and Jennie (Keith), Ibiza; sons: Ian (Julie), Southampton, U.K. and Andrew (Molly), Hong Kong; brother Donald (Lorna), Torquay, U.K.; grandchildren: Kaya, Douglas, Mark, Simon, Kyle, Jay and Carn. Besides his family, Michael's greatest passions were gardening, nature and geology, which he pursued well into retirement. In 2007 he received a citation from the Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences for his work on Fractofusus andersoni, a 565 million year old fossil named in his honour, which he discovered at Mistaken Point, Cape Race, and then documented in other parts of the Avalon Peninsula. He also worked to establish Fortune Head, Burin Peninsula, as a major geological site and tirelessly promoted Newfoundland and Labrador as a world-class geological destination. The family would like to thank Drs. Joshi, Tompkins, Duguid and Watson, as well as the staff at 7E St. Clare's. In accordance with Michael's wishes, cremation has already take place.
