Marion Thornton Wells, 93, of Sackville, NB passed away at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Sunday, December 5, 2010 with her family by her side. Born in Vancouver on Oct. 1, 1917, Marion was the daughter of the late Albert and Emma (Cochrane) Fownes and grew up in Moncton. Following graduation from Aberdeen High School, Moncton, and the Provincial Normal School, Fredericton, she taught in various schools (Taylor Village, Moncton, and Point de Bute) before her marriage and later was bookkeeper for the Sackville Medical Centre for over twenty years.
Marion was a member of the Sackville United Church, a charter and life member of the U.C.W., member of the Fort Beausejour I.O.D.E., Tantramar Heritage Trust and on the Honour Roll of St. Mark's A.C.W. She was also an honorary life member of the Westmorland Historical Society and formerly a member of the Sackville Business and Professional Women's Club. She will be deeply missed by her three sons, Chesley (Lynne) of Stony Plain, AB; Roger (Vicki) of Kentville, NS; Keith (Leanne) of Fredericton, NB; one granddaughter, Erin Wells of Vancouver; three grandsons, Matthew (Maggie) of Vancouver; Gregory of Jasper, AB, and Daniel (Dominika) of Airdrie, AB; five great grandchildren, Lucy, Geneissa, Kaitlynn, Max, and Kingston; one sister, Helen MacFarlane (Tracy) of Moncton; three nieces, Tracy Wolfe (Bob) of Gaspé, PQ; Barbara Moore (Richard) of Toronto; Donna Quinton (Don) of Point Claire, PQ; two nephews, Douglas Fownes (Diane) of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and David Fownes (Cathy) of Point Claire, PQ. Marion was predeceased by her husband Harold Charles (1987), brother Robert Fownes (2002), and sister-in-law Marion Fownes (2006). Grateful thanks are extended to her friends as well as to the staff at the Sackville Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care and support. Marion rested at the Jones Family Funeral Home, 70 Bridge Street, Sackville (364-1300) with visitation Monday, Dec. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service was held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Colin Grant officiating. Following the service, a reception was held at the Funeral Home.
