Passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, Fredericton, NB on December 2, 2010 at age 88. Fred was predeceased by his wife Margaret and son Paul. Fred leaves to mourn his three sisters, Elizabeth Skinner and Dorothy (Barry) Simmonds of Kelowna, BC and Marjorie (Bert) Dunn of Houston, Texas: numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and a large circle of friends. Special thanks to Fred's caregivers who lovingly cared for him during his illness including his homecare providers, Doctors, Extramural Nurses, and staff at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit.
Throughout his life Fred was extremely involved in his community. He was an active Lion for over 50 years, serving in many capacities culminating in his receiving the distinguished 'Melvin Jones Award'. Fred served faithfully as Treasurer of the Lions Club for many years, as well as in the Portage Program and the annual Dippy Dog Fundraiser. He also was an active community volunteer and for many years was Board Treasurer of the Victorian Order of Nurses, volunteer and blood donor with the Red Cross Society Blood Donor Clinics, and as one of the founders and original board member of the Newfoundland Cerebral Palsy Association. A native of St. John's, Newfoundland and a 44 year resident of Fredericton, NB, Fred was a welcoming host to all family and friends who were travelling through New Brunswick.
There will be no visitation. A 'Celebration of Life' will be held in Fredericton, NB and A 'Memorial Service' will be held in St. John's, NL at a later date to be announced. Interment will be at the Belvedere Cemetery.
No flowers by request. Donations may be made in Fred's honor to the Lion's Club or the Canadian Cancer Society.
