He emigrated to Canada in 1953, where he met his future wife Joyce in Toronto. They married in Montreal, and went on to raise 8 children together. In 1968, they moved to St. John's, where Ben became the Manager of Photographic Services at Memorial University. He fell in love with this province, its people and its scenery, and spent over half his life documenting the culture and people of Newfoundland and Labrador. A pioneer of Newfoundland cultural photography, he published 13 books, and his photographs won countless awards all over the world. In 2009, he received an honorary doctorate from Memorial. Ben Hansen was most proud of (and adored by) his large family, and his life's work is a testament of his dedication to them. Donations may be made in Ben's honour to the First Baptist Church Christian School. To sign the on line guest please visit www.barretts.ca.
