HALL, Arthur Eugene - January 31, 1921-December 4, 2010, 89. It is with very sad and heavy hearts we announce the passing of our father, Arthur Eugene Hall, at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital on the 4th of December, 2010. Arthur lived in Port Maitland and was a member of Saint Vincent de Paul Parish in Salmon River, Port Maitland Legion Branch #143 and the South West Nova Scotia Ostomy Association of Canada. Arthur was born in Springdale to the parents of Franklyn Eugene Hall and Florence Mae (Challoner) Hall. Dad started his retail career very early on at the age of 12 going door-to-door selling Homer-Warren products. When World War II began in September of 1939, Dad wanted to join the Military but his parents said no. They needed him at home to help with the farm. At the age of 19, he went to work selling insurance, travelling by bicycle. Dad was happy doing this but still wanted to join the Military. Later in 1939, he joined the Military and left for the number 6 depot in Halifax. In the Military, he became a cook and served for 7 years. On March 2, 1946 he went to the Grand Hotel to work as a cook and that is where he met our mother, Bernice Margret Marie Walsh. After working at the Grand Hotel for a while, he decided to go back to selling insurance. From this he went on to sell Fuller Brush and Singer sewing machines door-to-door. Then he went to work for Berwick Bakery, now known as Canada Bread, selling bakery products for 35 years until he retired. He loved gardening and giving away lots of food. He would go through the village with the truck loaded with fresh produce and give it to anyone that needed it. He also enjoyed square dancing with his wife Bernice. He also had a great love for animals, reading and writing. On September 1, 1948, Arthur and Beatrice were married. Arthur is survived by his two loving daughters: Paulette Hicks (Charles) of Bear River, and Pamela Deveau (Carl) of Beaver River, where Arthur resided after Bernice passed away; grandchildren: Chad Hersey (Kerry Sandford) of Yarmouth, Danielle Deveau (Dean O'Neil) of Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Penni Hicks of Bear River; great-grandchildren: Julie, Alexis and Isabelle. Arthur was pre-deceased by his wife of 62 years, Bernice Margret Marie (Walsh) Hall, and brother Irvin Hall. The funeral took place at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Salmon River at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, Father Albeni d'Entremont officiated. Visitation took place at the Meteghan Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9, where a legion service followed at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Yarmouth SPCA.
