On December 15, 2010 with his family by his side, Elwood John McMinniman peacefully passed away at home. The last surviving member of his immediate family, Elwood is predeceased by his father, John, Mother, Inez and brother, Merle. Left to celebrate his memory is his wife of 59 years, Joycelyn (Smalley), daughter Mary Ellen (MacLeod), Grant and their children Ryan & Justin, his son Franklyn, Monique and their children Alex & Marc and daughter Carrie Anne (Sewell), John and their children Wyatt & Wilem, and extended family members. Born on May 29, 1928, a resident of Rabbittown, Elwood (Woodie) was a charter member of the Phalanx later referred to as the Epsilon Y's Men's Club. Elwood is remembered for his recurring role as an end-man, "the Snowball" in the annual Smokey Mokes Minstrel show productions which ran for several years. This organization was involved in several community initiatives, and was best known for their support of the Polio Clinic and providing baskets and necessities to families in need. Elwood devoted his life to his family and second love, the automobile business. A highly respected car salesman and later Sales Manager, Elwood began his career at Lawson Motors where he was employed for over 40 years and continued in the business as Sales Manager until retiring from Clark Toyota. Elwood enjoyed his leisure time at "Compound 42" on the shores of Lake George where he was always surrounded by family and friends. With the gift of gab Elwood always had time for those he knew and those he had never met before. Six loving grandsons kept Elwood busy at the bbq and policing the waters.
At the request of the family, there will be no visitation. A Celebration of Woodie will be held on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 3pm at Grace Memorial Baptist Church with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers and for those who wish, a contribution to the Fredericton Community Kitchen would be appreciated.
