Dr. A.W. Gyorfi, 86, of Howie Centre, passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Targu, Romania, he was the son of the late Alexander and Margit Gyorfi of Hungary.
He was educated in many parts of the world such as University of Cluj, Budapest, Halle An Der Salle, Germany, Brussels University, McGill University, Acadia University. He graduated and got married in 1949, and emigrated from Belgium in 1952. He established the laboratory at St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay, worked in New Waterford, North Sydney, Sydney Mines and St. Rita Hospital in Sydney for 40 years.
He was a fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Bio Chemistry, a member of the resident staff of the Montreal Children's Hospital, the New York Academy of Science, The Canadian Society of Cytology, the Institute of Tropical Medicine, the Szechenyi Society and the Canadian Society of Clinical Scientists.
He was a friend of the Raptors and helped establish Wild Life Habitat in Cape Breton; he represented Canada at the International Pathology Congress in Brussels during the world fair in 1958. He was the Assistant Provincial Commissioner of the Boy Scouts in Nova Scotia and received the wood badge. He was the Founder of Camp Carter Boy Scout Camp in New Harris, C.B., in 1966 and was awarded the 125th Anniversary Canadian Confederation Medal. He received numerous awards and certificates for his efforts in many fields.
His hobbies were scouting, fishing, scuba diving, stamp collecting, sailing, skiing, hiking, horseback riding, music, wood working, antiques, wine making and photography.
He is survived by his wife Jeanne Angela (Jan); daughter, Patricia of Calgary; sons, Alexander 'Rick' (Debbra-Anne) of Ontario, Steven of West Lake Ainslie, Craig of Halifax, Dennis of South Lake Ainslie, and Peter of Sydney; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Besides his parent he was predeceased by a sister, Marguerite and a grandson, Terrance.
There will be visitation for Dr. Gyorfi from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. There will be a grave side service Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 10 a.m. in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, with Fr. Will MacPherson officiating.
