MacDONALD, Vera Viola (Smith), fondly known as Nannie Mac -75, of Pictou, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, January 1, 2011, in the Palliative Care Unit of Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born April 20, 1935 in Springville, she was a daughter of the late Fielding and Annie (Naugler) Smith. Over the years Vera found pleasure volunteering as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Branch 16, Royal Canadian Legion, playing cards at the seniors, trying her hand at Bingo, and spending time with her family. Vera will be remembered for her love of music. She was happy during her years working at the Registry of Deeds, and in her retirement working as a caregiver for Dolly Davey. Looking after others gave Vera a greater purpose in life. Later Vera found her greatest pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald; son, Frederick Brian; and brother, Donald. Surviving are sons, Clarence MacDonald, PEI; Gerald (Fern Baillie) MacDonald , Pictou; daughters, Linda (Gregg) Murray, Pictou; Eva (Jody) Sutherland, Pictou; sisters, Freda (Glen) Cowan, Riverview, NB; Chrystal (John) Emmerson, Moncton, NB; Audrey Cann, Dartmouth; brothers, Fred (Bonnie) Smith, Plymouth; Harold (Sybil) Smith, Pictou; ten grandchildren, one great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements have been entrusted to McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou, where Vera's family will receive friends from 2-4, and 7-9 PM on Wednesday. Funeral will be held 11:00 AM Thursday from the Pictou United Church, with Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating. Burial will follow in Haliburton Cemetery. Family flowers only please. In lieu of flowers donations in Vera's memory may be made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, or a charity of your choice. On behalf of Vera the family would like to extend many thanks to Dr. Burrill, the nurses on 2-North, RCU nurses, Dr. Farrell and the nurses in Palliative Care for their constant care, and support over the past months. Special thanks are extended to the residents at Church Street Villa for the laughter and friendship.
