Mary Rosella 'Rosie' Smith, 83, of King's Road, Dominion, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney, where she had been residing for the past four years.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John James and Lorena (Spencer) MacDonald.
Rosie was a member of Chalmers United Church, Dominion. A witty lady with a great sense of humour, Rosie could often be seen in her garden planting roses and enjoying nature to the fullest. But mostly, Rosie will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, always putting her family number one on the list.
She is survived by her eight daughters, Barbara McDonald, Susan MacDonald, Janice Mackie, Glace Bay, Frances Smith, Dominion, Lorna (Frank) McKinnon, Oshawa, Cynthia (Greg) MacKenzie, Saskatchewan, Wendy (Tommy) MacKenzie, New Waterford, Patricia (Brian) Goodwin, Tennessee, USA; three sons, George (Gloria), Glace Bay, Gerald (Brenda) and Ricky (Mae), Dominion. Rosie is survived by two brothers, Bobby (Rosalie), Johnny, Glace Bay, and three sisters, Agnes (Kenny) Pastuck, New Waterford, Cecilia McPherson, Toronto, Ann McDonald (Clarence Gillis), Glace Bay. Also left to mourn her passing are 31 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Rosie was predeceased by her husband, George Smith in 1996, a daughter, Ellen Lorraine in infancy, granddaughter, Vicki Lorraine, four sisters, Honey, Kathleen, Theresa, Shirley, two brothers, Melvin and John, grandson, Christopher and great-granddaughter, Jordynne.
The visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Clayton Austin is Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Warden United Church, Glace Bay, followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Rosie, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the N.S. Alzheimer Association or a charity of one's choice.
