Charles MacLean Moffatt passed away peacefully at Harbour View Veterans' Hospital on Dec. 30, 2010.
Born May 10, 1916, he was raised in Pottle's Lake, North Sydney, the son of Lillian, a homemaker, and Warren, a farmer. Like his father, Charlie worked as a farmer but made his career in the Canadian Armed Forces retiring in 1967. While in the Forces he was stationed in Newfoundland, New Mexico, Key West, Fla., Britain and North Africa.
Active in his community, Charlie was a member of the Shriners, the Masons, a former member of the Eastern Star, a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church and an adherent to the Calvary Baptist Church.
His hobbies of coin collecting and genealogy kept him occupied in his retirement along with service to CB Hoare Auto Parts and the Corp of Commissionaires.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joyce (Myalls/Hannem); stepsons, Wally Hannem (Susan), John Hannem (Merri-Sue), Roland Hannem (Beth); grandchildren, Pattie, Pauline and Pam; step-grandchildren, Jane, Louise, Stacey, David, Denise, Mark, Aaron, Septh, Nicole and Bhreagh; 11 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Valda Maxwell and brother-in-law, Wally Myalls.
He was predeceased by his parents, sister and brother-in-law, Lillian and John MacDonald, daughter and son-in-law, Lillian and Aubrey Sharpe, stepson, Gordon Hannem.
The family would like to thank the Veterans' Unit nurses and staff for their care of Charlie over the last nine years. A special thanks to volunteer Pauline MacKeigan for her love and laughter while giving of her time to make each day a little more special for Charlie and many others.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service for Charlie will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, with Rev. John Hannem, officiating. Burial at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Calvary Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
