It is with deepest sadness that the family of Phillip Bruce Stead announce his passing on Jan. 2, 2011.
Born in Truro, N.S., Phillip was the only son of Wally and Georgie (Brenton) Stead. He grew up on the Beach Hill Dairy Farm in Princeport where he developed his lifelong love of agriculture. As a young boy he was actively involved with 4H, basketball and music. He attended Onslow High School where he met his life long love, Lynne (Harrop).He was a graduate of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Truro and McGill University, Montreal and held a Master's Degree from Virginia Technical Poly Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia. He worked for the Nova Scotia Agricultural College for 29 years and was happiest when he was in the barn or in the fields with his farming friends.
Phillip was a dedicated husband to his wife of 47 years, Lynne (Harrop) and loving father to his daughters, Deborah Stead (Mrs. Brian Frizzell), Truro and Barbara Stead-Coyle (Mrs. Sean Coyle), Sydney. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Greta Harrop, Truro; sister-in-law, Shelley Morrisey, her husband, Trent Morrisey and their three sons, Matthew, Patrick and Benjamin Morrisey, Ottawa. He enjoyed spending time with his three granddaughters, Ashley Frizzell and Caroline and Marianne Coyle.
Phillip's true passion was horse racing and he was overjoyed to be co-owner of his own horse, Mainlander, who brought him hours of pleasure.
A celebration of Phillip's life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at the First Baptist Church in Truro with Rev. John Tonks officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation (Kids Care Fund), or the QE ll Foundation (Cancer Care Fund).
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro.
