Just before noon Wednesday, December 22, 2010, Marie Geneva Lynch, 86, quickly, quietly and calmly slipped from this life. Marie was the daughter of the late Arthur and Ida Patterson of Windsor. She lived most of her life in Kentville and New Minas. As well as tending to her home, she helped her husband Harry with his business and worked outside the home at the South Shore Credit Bureau where she was assistant manager, as a real estate agent with Minas Realties, a clerk with Maritime Life, an insurance rep at Sears Canada, a regional distributor for the Fuller Brush Company, and at one time operated a tea room in Kentville. She also worked at K&P Handyland. Never idle, Marie also cared for her father-in-law, Fred Lynch, helped her parents, as well as several elderly members of the community. In her free time she and Harry loved to dance. In retirement Marie, aged 68, took up tennis. At 70 she learned to golf. All the while she was a constant and vigorous volunteer. She was a CGIT leader and Sunday school teacher at the Kentville Baptist Church. She canvassed for the Red Cross, Heart & Stroke, and Cancer Societies. She volunteered with Red Cross Blood Donor clinics and for several years oversaw the Royal Canadian Legion's Poppy Campaign, helping to make it one of the most successful in the province. She served on the Executive of the Kentville Legion and for all her work - the Poppy Campaign, setting up and serving breakfast, participating in sick and visiting, helping with dances - she was awarded a Legion life membership. Marie also spent ten years volunteering with Fidelis House, seven of those years as house manager, where she accumulated over 14,000 volunteer hours. During 9/11 she was part of a Red Cross group who set up the Dartmouth High School as a reception centre for stranded travelers. For the duration of the disaster she volunteered at Camp Aldershot helping 1500 trapped travelers relocated there. Marie was Provincial Volunteer of the Year in 2005 and cited by numerous organizations for her giving. Canadian Living Magazine featured her as a Caring Canadian. She was a gregarious woman who loved to garden and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren, her family and friends. Marie is survived by her daughter, Kathleen "Kay" Jordan, Kentville; son, Allan, New Minas; granddaughters, Shelley Potter (John Karapita), Toronto; Heather (Christopher) Thomson, Kentville; Terri (Clark) Deveau, Yarmouth and six great grandchildren. She is survived by her sister, Gladys Wilson, Fredericton and brother, Ralph Patterson, Windsor. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Harry, sister, Leta; brothers, Eric, Laurie and Owen; son-in-law, Al Jordan. Reverend Gary Manthorne conducted a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A family greeting followed. No visitation. No flowers. A family burial took place in Oak Grove Cemetery, Kentville. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Red Cross, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Poppy Fund or Fidelis House Society.
