KRAUSE - Judith Laurel Krause (nee Schinbein), of Swift Current, SK, passed away December 21, 2010, at Cypress Regional Hospital. A memorial service was held on December 30, at First United Church in Swift Current. Laurel was born November 11, 1953, to parents Rodney and Phyllis Schinbein, in Cabri, SK. At the age of nine, she moved with her parents, and brothers Brett and Tim, to Swift Current, where she attended Oman, Central, and W.A. Beatty, and met her future husband, Des, in 1968. In 1971, Laurel enrolled in the College of Home Economics at the University of Saskatchewan, taking a Bachelors Degree in Home Ec., in 1975. She began what was to be a thirty-year career in education, teaching Home Ec., first at Central Collegiate in Moose Jaw, then at Gull Lake High School. On June 14, 1975 Laurel was married to Desmond Michael Krause, at First United Church, in Swift Current, SK. They have been at each others' side ever since. In 1977, Laurel received a second degree, in Education, from the University of Saskatchewan, and later began teaching at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School. She also taught at Cypress Hills College and O.M. Irwin. Though she continued teaching Home Economics throughout her career, she also brought the same commitment to other subjects including Science, Mathematics, and Psychology. In addition to her work in education, Laurel was actively involved in a number of extracurricular and community activities, whether in support of her two sons, Geoff and Brandt, or to pursue her own passions. These included: music, theatre, and the arts, Scouting, sports, sewing and quilting, and the overall support of her community. Laurel served two full terms on the University of Saskatchewan's Senate, representing Swift Current's District, and received the Alumni Association's Service Award in November 2010 for her advocacy and organizational work with the U of S and communities within the region. Though Laurel retired from teaching at the Comp in 2005, and was later diagnosed with breast cancer, she continued her involvement with the University, the Red Hat Adventurers, Swift Current Little Theatre, and other groups and activities. She also enjoyed travelling in her retirement, to places such as Palm Springs and Egypt. Laurel is predeceased by her parents, Phyllis and Rodney, and survived by her husband Des in Swift Current, sons Geoff and Brandt (Katie) in Calgary, brothers Tim in Calgary and Brett (Charlotte) in Regina, and sisters Joni (Mac) of Lazo, BC, and Georgia (Neil) of Ottawa, ON. She will be remembered by her family, friends, students, and colleagues for her warmth, energy, commitment, and kindness, and she will be missed.
