BURRIS, Edwin Lloyd - 89, Folly Lake
We regret to announce the death of our father, Edwin "Ed" Burris who died peacefully on June 29, 2009. Born in Princeport on April 24, 1920, he was a son of the late Levi and Hattie (Hughes) Burris. He grew up on the family farm in Green Oaks, Colchester County. In his early 20's he enlisted to serve in the Canadian army during Second World War. He spent over a year fighting on the front lines in Europe. He was wounded in battle and, as the bullet in his leg was not able to be removed, he carried it with him for the rest of his life. After the war he returned to Colchester County to work and, soon thereafter, he met the love of his life, Elsie Blanchard of Charlottetown, PEI, who was working in Truro. Ed and Elsie were married in 1947 and raised five children. The family lived in Londonderry for a time before moving to Folly Lake in 1957. Ed worked mainly in the construction industry within the province of Nova Scotia. He was a member of the carpenters' and joiners' union and worked on many of the larger buildings in Truro and surrounding area. He retired in 1980. Ed was an outdoorsman and a lover of animals. He loved to fish, hunt, trap or just to walk in the woods. He and Elsie always had a family pet or two, the last being his beloved German shepherd "Duke". For a number of years Ed raised purebred Pom-Poo dogs. He kept chickens and provided fresh eggs to family and friends. He also maintained a vegetable garden until he was well into his eighties. Ed and Elsie's home in Folly Lake was modest but filled with love. They always enjoyed having friends and family visit them. Their home was warm and welcoming. After Elsie's death in December of 2002 Ed continued to reside in his home in Folly Lake on his beloved Folly Mountain until last year when, due to failing health, he was no longer able to do so. For the last year Ed lived at the Veteran's Memorial Building in Halifax where he continued to welcome visits from family and friends. The family would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation to the magnificent staff of the 6th floor, East Wing of the Veterans' Memorial Building who provided truly kind and sensitive care to Ed during his last year. Ed is survived by brother, John Hamilton; sons, Reg, Kim and Eddie; daughters, Evelyn and Debbie; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Elsie (Blanchard); brothers, Albert, Russell and Clinton; sisters, Evelyn Burris and Ann Collins. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2009 at 11:00 am in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Rev. Douglas MacEachern officiating. A reception will follow the service in the funeral home hosted by the women’s group of St. Francis by the Lakes Parish of Lower Sackville, NS. Interment in St. Ambrose Catholic Church Cemetery, Londonderry following the reception.
