Passed in: Pomquet, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: June 30th, 2009
It is with great sadness that the family of George Porter announce his passing on June 30, 2009.
Growing up in Stellerton, he was the son of the late David and Margaret Anne (Doyle) Porter.
George grew up around the family business, D. Porter and Son. George had a firm belief in the Cooperative Model and at an early age was inspired by Fr. Jimmy Tompkins, living his life around these principles. After his start in the family business he went on to found ‘Co-op Building Supplies’ in Sydney, N.S., acting as general manager until his retirement.
George was an active member of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus for 67 years, holding several offices including Grand Knight and State Treasurer.
In retirement, George and Margaret, his wife of 66 years, operated Porters Bed and Breakfast in Pomquet, N.S., where they were warmly welcomed into the community. This continued to be an ongoing source of pride, satisfaction and life long friendships and gave them wonderful retirement years.
George is survived by the love of his life, Margaret (Mc Daniel) Porter; daughters, Virginia (Bill) Turner, Pomquet, Jane Hominick, Riverview, N.B.; and sons, Dave (Josephine), Sackville, N.S., and Terry, Ontario; his brother, Clarence (Gladys) Porter, Stellerton; and his special sister-in-law, Catherine McDaniel, NE Margaree, N.S. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Sarah (Joseph) Abihanna, Halifax, Daniel Porter, Sackville, N.S., David (Jocelyn) Turner, Edmonton, Alta., and Laura (Jason) Hominick, Riverview, N.B., who were his pride and joy and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents George was predeceased by his brother, Garfield, and sisters, Eileen (JP) MacNeil and Virginia (Owen) McCarthy.
The family will be receiving visitors at MacIsaac Funeral Home, 61 Pleasant St., Antigonish, Thursday, July 2, 7-9 p.m. and Friday, July 3, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funereal mass, celebrated by Fr. Peter Baccardax, will be held at Ste. Croix parish church, Pomquet, on Saturday, July 4 at 11 a.m.
Family flowers only. Donations in memory of George may be made to Antigonish and Area Homemaker Service or Ste. Croix cemetery fund.
