It is with great that we announce the peaceful passing of Alexander Roderick (Sandy) Matheson on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Port Morien, Jan. 25, 1947, he was the son of the late Robert and Mary (Andrews) Matheson of Port Morien.
Sandy was a member of the Pipe Fitters and Millwright unions and worked on various construction sites and retired due to ill health from Atomic Energy of Canada. He was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Port Morien.
Sandy was very devoted to his family and cherished every moment he spent with his children and precious grandchildren. He will be missed by his old pal, Max.
Sandy is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sandra (Butts); by his son, Jason (Carrie), Grand Cache, Alta.; daughters, Terie (Donnie) Buchanan, New Glasgow, N.S., Deanna (Chris), Hampton, N.B.; and by grandchildren, Alexandra, Riley, Corbin, Kaiden and Zander; brothers, Robert (Linda), Clarence (Rose); sister, Georgina (Mike) Byrne, all of Port Morien. Also left to mourn is his mother-in-law, Phyllis Butts, and her family and many cousins, nieces, nephews and several close friends.
Visitation was held Sunday, Jan. 9 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will take place Monday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Church, Port Morien, with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Interment will take place at St. Paul's Cemetery at a later date.
As an expression of sympathy for Sandy, memorial donations in his memory may be made to St. Paul's Anglican Church or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
