The death of John Douglas Delaney occurred on January 6, 2011 in Fredericton at Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born in McAdam in 1924, he was the son of the late Ernest and Helen (Nellie) (Watson) Delaney. Doug was predeceased by his brother Donald.
Doug gave five years of his life to the military service in WWII, taking part in the Battle of the North Atlantic and the D Day invasion of Normandy. Doug enjoyed travelling, including many trips to Spain, Arizona and Boston. He loved his family and good times spent in the summer cottage at Harvey Lake. A highlight of his daily routine was his morning walk with his good friend, Allie Swan. He was an active member of St. Paul's United Church, McAdam and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion McAdam Branch #7.
Doug is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gertrude L. (Dorcas) Delaney; two sons, John Delaney (Marise), Fredericton and Paul Delaney (Shannon), Saint John; a daughter, Ferne Kilbride (Terry), Fredericton; two sisters, Jean Ferris (late husband Don), Moncton and Helen Riddell (James), Calgary, AB; grandchildren, Chris Kilbride (Mylene), Rob Kilbride (Tina), Patrick Delaney, Jill Delaney, Michael Delaney, Rebecca Delaney, Patricia Russell (Chris), Erin Snook, Kevin Vaillancourt, Nadine Vaillancourt; three great grandchildren, twins Audrey and Emile and baby Lily; several special nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at St. Paul's United Church, 155 Saunders Road, McAdam on Sunday, January 9, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 10, 2011 at 2 p.m. from the church with Rev. Ellen Beairsto officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Rockland Cemetery, McAdam. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute service will be held at the church during the service.
For those who wish to make a donation in memory of Doug, the family has suggested the St. Paul's United Church Memorial Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society.
