Robert Young
The death of Robert "Bob" Henry Young of Fredericton, NB occurred at Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, NB on January 9, 2011. Born in 1924 at Bathurst, NB, he was the son of the late Robert M. and Eva (Mean) Young and husband of Marie (Ross) Young. Bob was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother and son who truly enjoyed family times, especially when they involved good food, music and the outdoors. He played the piano, was a pipe band drummer, and took up the harmonica when his vision no longer allowed him to read music. He read extensively, loved to cast a fly rod, and was a keen walker and cyclist well into his 80's. Bob was a prolific writer of essays, stories and poems, many of which explored his lifelong commitment to peace and disarmament. Bob joined the Air Force (RCAF) in 1942 and became a pilot and instructor, later based in England flying transports in Europe as part of the post-war relief effort. He graduated from UNB in Forestry, class of 1950, and worked for the NB Department of Natural Resources for over thirty years, committed to the concept of sustainable forestry. Bob contributed much to his community everywhere he lived, through Veterans Against Nuclear Arms, Branch #4 Canadian Legion, Stepping Stones, Golden Club, Project Ploughshares, Golden Toastmasters, Masonic Lodge and Shriner's, and many other groups. He was an active member of Wilmot United Church. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Fredericton Men's Shelter and the Community Kitchen. Bob and Marie were awarded the YMCA Canada Peace Medal together in 1997. Bob is survived by his wife Marie, son, Robert (Yvonne) of Nelson, BC; daughters, Judith Brannen (John) of West Chezzetcook, NS, Karen (Gallagher) LeBlanc (Eric) of Fredericton, NB, Linda Young (David Lombardi) of Dartmouth, NS and Dorothy Rice (Dan) of Three Fathom Harbour, NS; grandchildren Amy (Andrew Pearson), Jessica (Per Langstrom) and Eva Brannen, Daniel Gallagher, Anne and Peter Lombardi, Victoria Rice, and Bryce and Claire Young; great-grandchildren Astrid and Axel Langstrom Brannen; brother Norman R (Edith) of Bathurst, NB, sister-in-law Jean Young of Bathurst, NB, and sister Dorothy Raine (Monty) of Princeton, BC as well as several nieces and nephews.
