Kathleen Hartt

Hartt, Kathleen Rose (nee Carter)
Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia on September 13, 1922, daughter of William Carter and Anita Baker. Kay moved to Dartmouth in 1947 with her beloved husband Leo, who predeceased her in 1978. She is survived by her sister Dorothy White (91 years old), children Tony (Rosemary) of Oshawa, Barry (Vancouver), Doug (Gisele LeBlanc) of Cheticamp, Elizabeth (Robert Iuliucci) of East Berlin, Greg (Fredericton), Chris (Gretchen Pohlkamp) of Dartmouth; sixteen grandchildren: Kathy, Megan, Corrie, Vishva, Nikki, Jim, Sean, Annette, Rosalynn, Carmen, Maxx, Scott, Joe, Josh, Brigitte, and Noah, eleven great-grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews. Kay will also be remembered by close family friends and neighbours Pat Melanson, Petra Hartt, Francis Benteau, Jean and Bernie Roberts, and the Carters. She was predeceased in 2005 by brother Harry Carter and in 1975 by infant granddaughter Tala. Kay was a founding member of the St. Paul's parish, long time volunteer with many Dartmouth organizations including the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Dartmouth General Hospital, Hope Cottage, Dartmouth Minor Hockey as a sweater manager, St. Paul's Catholic Women's League and the St. Paul's Women's Association, and a key organizer of the St. Paul's Catholic Church annual Valentine Tea for all 63 years. Kay worked for Statistics Canada as an interviewer following the death of Leo. In her leisure time, she was an avid bridge player, fisher, gardener, bowler, and community volunteer. Up to the last year of her life, summer days would find her digging in her vegetable garden, swimming at the lake, reading a book in the back yard, mowing her lawn. She left a huge legacy for her family: when she was turning 80 she decided she wanted to swim across Lake Banook and did so accompanied by many of her family members on her birthday for the next four years and at Penhorn Lake each year since then. Her motto was 'swim, don't float'. She also believed in growing the family and kept in close contact with everyone who was ever connected to the family.
Visitation will be held at Dartmouth Funeral Home on Friday January 14, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral will take place at 11 AM on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at St. Paul's Church, Windmill Road, Dartmouth. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation.
