On Jan. 11, 2011, the family of Elmer 'Porky' McMullin witnessed his long courageous battle with cancer reach a peaceful conclusion. He embraced his passion for life and natural wit until his final days.
Elmer 'Porky' was an avid sportsman beginning with his hockey career which included his induction into the Cape Breton Sports hall of fame for his role as a defenseman with the famous Glace Bay 'Cinderella' Miners of the 1955-56 season. Since 1961 he was well known in the harness racing circles owning many race horses up to present day.
Porky was also very well known for his lifelong career in the auto sales business. He will be long remembered for his caring generosity and support of others.
Porky was predeceased by his parents, William and Caroline (MacLeod) McMullin and his brother, Francis as well as his sisters, Mary, Betty and Joey.
Porky is survived and will be missed by his daughter, Sonya Mac Isaac (Jim Greek) and her brother, Glenn McMullin (Samantha); as well as grandchildren, Marcus Mac Isaac and Rebecca McMullin. He is also survived by sister, Peggy Petrie and brothers, Tom (Carmen) McMullin and Joe (Raylene) McMullin; as well as many nieces and nephews and hundreds of dear friends.
Visitation will be at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14 with the celebration of life funeral mass being held at St. Joseph's Church, Reserve Mines at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15 with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating.
