Janet McKay
Janet McKay,
West River.
We are sad to announce the passing on January 13, 2011, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, of our mother and friend, Janet McKay, of West River and Caribou Island. Born on April 12, 1925 in PEI, Janet grew up in Truro where her mother taught school. Summertime meant many weeks at her grandparent's farm in West River, the Creighton Farm was well known for providing fresh produce especially strawberries. After high school Janet attended and graduated from the Maritime School of Social Work. Janet met, fell in love and married Gerald McKay. They lived, worked, and raised their family on Montreal's West Island. After retirement, Janet and Jerry moved back to the family homestead in West River and began life once more as Nova Scotians. Janet was predeceased by her dear husband, Gerald and brother, Creighton. In her immediate family, she is survived by one brother, Angus (Sharon) in Florida; her sons, Alex of Toronto, and Jim of Hearst, Ontario; and her sister-in-law, Phyllis Gillis, of Orangeville, Ontario. Janet was a dedicated social worker; she was also devoted to many causes and campaigns. She and Gerald worked tirelessly to improve the fabric of their community and country. Family, friends, dogs and birds were all loved and cared for by Janet; she made many lasting friendships throughout her life, she will be missed. But Janet would want us to go on with love and care in our hearts. There will be a visitation for Janet's friends and family at McLaren Funeral Home in Pictou on Monday, January 17, from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 18, at 3:00 PM from the Hector Exhibit Centre, Haliburton Road, Pictou. No flowers please, any donations in Janet's name can be made to whichever cause is most dear to your heart.
